More than a half century ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower quoted J. Roscoe Miller, president of Northwestern University, in a speech to Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches. Eisenhower told the assembly that, "I have two kinds of problems: the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent." This "Eisenhower Principle" is said to be how the president organized his workload and priorities.
This principle is certainly true where career decisions are concerned. It’s easy to get caught up in a reactive cycle of applying online, rushing from mixer to workshop and back to a mixer, and never ponder which activity or event is best for you. Meanwhile, important tasks such as self-reflection and journaling, investments in skill upgrades, and/or reaching out to someone who can really ignite your career are left undone.
This month, the ASU Alumni Career Services program will host a wide array of events and classes to help Sun Devils accelerate their professional development. Discover which ones will help you accomplish the most important tasks on your career agenda, and watch your reputation take flight!
