Enrich Our Communities

The Arizona State University Alumni Association works every day to forge a stronger alumni and university community. We endeavor to preserve the university’s rich history and enhance the university’s future by engaging past and future generations, today’s students, alumni and community members in university traditions.

Traditions Fund

Critical to the mission of Arizona State University is the solid foundation of graduates’ affiliation with their institution; one of the keys to building this foundation are traditions remembered from student days. For students, traditions demonstrate their place in the continuing history of the university. For alumni, traditions reaffirm their continued affiliation with the university community. The Arizona State University Alumni Association honors these traditions.

  • Whitewash the “A” – In one of the longest standing traditions at Arizona State University, the Student Alumni Association leads thousands of new freshmen up “A” Mountain to signify the start of a new school year by whitewashing the “A.”
  • Lantern Walk – First celebrated in 1917, Lantern Walk remains one of ASU’s most treasured traditions. Each year students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends follow the steps of their Sun Devil ancestors by carrying lanterns to the top of “A” Mountain.

  • Legends Luncheon - Launched during Homecoming 2008, the Legends Luncheon (in partnership with Sun Devil Club and Sun Devil Athletics) honors ASU’s football players, coaches or entire teams for their athletic achievements on the football field.

  • Homecoming – At Homecoming, the Arizona State University Alumni Association celebrates along with dozens of academic and programming units across the university. Homecoming carries with it many fond memories and personal ASU experiences. This widely anticipated event was first celebrated in 1924.

  • Founders’ Day – With a history that dates back to 1964, Founders’ Day is the signature Arizona State University spring event that brings together university and community leaders to celebrate ASU’s successes and recognize the individuals who exemplify the growth, diversity and achievement envisioned by the founders of the institution.

  • Golden Reunion - This long-standing tradition at ASU recognizes the 50-year reunion class with a two-day event that brings alumni back to campus. On the second day, the Golden Reunion class is inducted into the Golden Circle by a special candle lighting ceremony at the Old Main fountain.

  • ASU Cares Across the Nation– Arizona State University alumni across the nation volunteer throughout the month of March in their local communities to support organizations like food banks, public schools, community gardens and humane societies. Students, staff and alumni on the ASU campuses also participate, often by helping with the date and orange harvests on the campuses.

  • Pat’s Run Shadow Runs/Tillman Honor Run – Numerous alumni chapters and clubs participate in Pat’s Run Shadow Runs, now known as Tillman Honor Runs, across the country. These events coordinate with the Tempe Pat’s Run that honors fallen veteran and former student-athlete Pat Tillman and honor all people who serve in the nation’s military while supporting scholarship fundraising for the Tillman Foundation.
