It’s the start of a new year, and it’s tempting to join the fervor of your friends who are making New Year’s resolutions (even though only about 8 percent of resolutions are fulfilled) and try to cram as many career development opportunities as you can into January and February. But Dorie Clark, a marketing strategist and the author of the career books “Reinventing You” and “Stand Out, recommends that working professionals emphasize good strategy over pure volume of activities when it comes to plotting their career moves in 2017.

In an article posted last month in the Harvard Business Review, she had the following tips for job seekers wishing to ascend the career ladder this year.

  • Force yourself to set aside time. If trying to spend time thinking about your career by yourself isn’t happening, consider starting a mastermind group, where you and several friends help each other and hold each other accountable.

  • Get clear on your next steps. Clark suggests that you “pre-write” your resume, reflecting where you want to be in five years, and what it will take to get there.

  • Invest in deep work. Don’t be seduced by reactive career-boosters such as trying to answer email from the boss faster than anyone else. She says: “Instead, what marks you as successful over time is creating in-depth, valuable projects — whether that’s writing a book or a brilliant new piece of code, spearheading the launch of a promising product, or undertaking a meaningful initiative, like reorganizing the company’s performance review system.” Take the time to create something of lasting value!

  • Build your external reputation. Having support from people outside your current organization can demonstrate you have other opportunities if you want them. Take a leadership role in a professional association, blog on industry topics, or speaking at industry conferences can all help you remain visible in your field.
