From Sun Devil to Sensory Storyteller: How ASU Shaped My Autism Advocacy Journey
As a proud alumna of Arizona State University, I often reflect on how my time there didn’t just earn me a degree — it changed the way I see the world, parent my child, and empower families like mine.
After earning my Master’s in Special Education (Autism Spectrum Disorders) in 2023 and recently completing my Applied Behavior Analysis certificate through ASU Online (2025), I launched my autism-focused brand and published my first children’s book, Oli’s Sensory Safari. The book is inspired by my son, who is on the autism spectrum, and it’s designed to help young readers explore sensory differences with empathy and curiosity. It’s more than a story — it’s a bridge to inclusion.
What I remember most fondly about ASU is the powerful sense of connection, even in an online format. My peers came from all across the country — each bringing unique insights, lived experiences, and passion for neurodiversity. Our discussions were rich, real, and rooted in compassion. The instructors were deeply supportive, offering not just academic guidance but encouragement during challenging seasons of life and parenting.
One of my favorite memories is from my practicum experience. That hands-on work brought everything full circle for me — theory became practice, and I began to truly understand the beautiful complexity of individuals with autism, including my own son. ASU gave me the tools to see behavior as communication and advocate with heart and science.
ASU didn’t just prepare me for a career — it prepared me for my life’s purpose.
With gratitude,
Trina McKinney
