ASU's School of Sustainability paved the way for me to finally discover my true calling - in a professional sense. After more than a decade away from academia, I returned to ASU for graduate school—and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I owe much of my success to the incredible faculty, staff, and classmates who shaped my journey, and I couldn't be happier with where I am today.

I was part of what my fellow grad students called the "COVID Cohort," attending ASU from August 2020 to May 2022. One unexpected perk of starting school in the middle of a pandemic was having the campus nearly to myself—I rode my skateboard everywhere with no crowds to navigate!

Despite the challenges of remote learning, I made it a point to come to campus as often as possible, wanting to witness the impact of the pandemic firsthand. Some of my fondest memories are from Marty Anderies’ class in the basement of the library, where we shared reflections on this unique experience. I’ll always appreciate his willingness to teach in person during such an uncertain time.

Though I’m not religious, I found solace in the campus chapel, using it as a quiet space to work on breathing exercises that helped get me through the stress of grad school. Even as life on campus returned to normal, that little sanctuary remained a peaceful retreat from the heat and the crowds.

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, I completed my undergrad at the University of Utah (Go Utes!). Yet, ASU holds a very special place in my heart, and I will always be grateful for my time in the desert.
