My Sun Devil Story: Dr. Obonganwan Umanah
Doctor of Behavioral Health, 2024
I began my doctoral journey at Arizona State University in October 2021, pursuing a Doctor of Behavioral Health. Though the program was delivered online, the experience was anything but distant. From the beginning, I was intentional about cultivating authentic connections with my professors. After each class, I introduced myself, not simply as a student, but as a fellow professional eager to build meaningful relationships. I understood that while we were separated by screens, we were united by a shared commitment to education, service, and human connection.
Each professor I encountered responded with extraordinary grace, generosity, and encouragement. They welcomed my efforts to connect and offered a level of mentorship that extended beyond the virtual classroom. These interactions were more than academic exchanges - they became part of a transformative journey that enriched both my personal and professional life. Many of these individuals continue to serve as trusted colleagues and sources of inspiration. Living in California, I have had the joy of meeting fellow ASU alumni, and each interaction is a moment of shared pride. We speak of our experiences with reverence — not just the coursework, but the culture of excellence and inclusion that defines Arizona State University. When people ask me about my educational journey, I tell them that ASU is more than a university; it is a dynamic, empowering community that fosters intellectual growth, professional collaboration, and a profound sense of belonging. Arizona State University did not just award me a doctoral degree — it deepened my purpose, expanded my perspective, and enriched the foundation from which I continue to lead and serve.
