I'm originally from Detroit, Michigan, and moving across the country to attend Arizona State University was one of the biggest-and best-decisions I've ever made. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, and ASU gave me opportunities I never would have had otherwise.
The people I remember most fondly are those in my Special Education program (College of Education). There were only about 20 of us, and that small group created a close-knit community. We supported each other through every assignment, late-night study session, and practicum placement. One of my classmates, Melissa, was also from Michigan—and funny enough, she ended up marrying one of my best friends. We’re still in touch today, and that friendship is one of my favorite takeaways from my time at ASU. My experience at ASU gave me the foundation I needed to build a career in education that I’m truly passionate about. The professional doors it opened—from classroom teaching to leadership—wouldn’t have been possible without the preparation and confidence I gained there. One of my favorite memories is walking across campus in the evenings after class. There was something about the energy of campus—calm but alive—that always reminded me I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I now give back by participating in Sun Devil Send-Offs to help welcome future students. It’s a full-circle moment that makes me proud to be a Sun Devil!
