When I reflect on my journey, Arizona State University stands at the center as the place that gave me a chance when few others would. ASU opened the door for me not only to complete my undergraduate studies in microbiology but also to begin envisioning a future in higher education, research, and medicine. That opportunity transformed my life trajectory, laying the foundation for my eventual work as faculty, a researcher, and now a medical student.
Returning to ASU years later as an adjunct faculty member, teaching at both the Tempe and Downtown Phoenix campuses, was a full-circle moment. Standing at the front of classrooms where I once sat as a student, I have been able to mentor and guide students who share circumstances similar to my own. Supporting their aspirations has been deeply impactful, reminding me of the importance of representation and encouragement in higher education.
ASU has also been a family affair. My wife began her academic professional career as an academic advisor in the School of Life Sciences at Tempe. Over time, she earned two master’s degrees at ASU, and later taught at the College of Nursing and Health Innovation for several years. Her path reflects the same spirit of growth, resilience, and commitment to students that ASU fostered in me. Together, our lives and careers have been intertwined with ASU’s mission to expand opportunity and empower learners.
Today, as I balance my roles in academia, research, and medical education, I carry with me the lessons of perseverance and innovation that ASU instilled. Being part of the Sun Devil community means more than a degree; it means belonging to a family that believes in second chances, nurtures potential, and inspires service. For me and my wife, ASU has never been just a university; it has been a launching point, a home, and a lifelong commitment to education and equity.
