Hello! My name is Angela. I am currently living in South Korea.

I’m beyond proud to share that I’ve graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Arizona State University Online, with the highest distinction!

It’s been a wonderful experience. I have applied to the ASU Online Anthropology Bachelor Degree because I wanted to take care of my family members while working in my own country. I chose anthropology because it is very broad and interdisciplinary. It also helps me open my mind to new things and have an understanding of people on the basis of culture. You might say, “Aren't online degrees limiting in terms of opportunities?” Well, that is an absolute no. While I was learning about wonderful civilizations and tribes on Canvas, I’ve been able to meet professors, anthropologists from other institutions and universities and fellow students through Zoom as a Vice President of Diversity and Outreach of our Unified Anthropology Association Online (UAAO) and as a research apprentice of the SHESC Research Apprenticeship Programs. I have also tried out the Global Virtual Internship Program from the Global Education Office at ASU. Through this experience, I met fundraising specialists and nonprofit leadership members from other countries through Zoom. Lastly, during my experience at the Culture, Health and Environment Lab, I reached out to Dr. SturtzSreetharan and was able to do my own project on the perception of water in South Korea with the guidance of my professors. This experience of reaching out to others helped me build confidence and become less scared of rejection. I learned more about the different fields of anthropology and grew bolder in my abilities to communicate with people around the world!

Overall, I’ve developed strong skills in cross-cultural communication, qualitative research, and critical thinking. In my final semester, I was honored to receive the School of Human Evolution and Social Change’s Alumni Award for Undergraduate Achievement in Anthropology.

Looking back, this journey was very meaningful and fulfilling as I got to know more about the wonders of anthropology and grow personally along the way. One major takeaway from anthropology is how everything is interconnected, and understanding it requires interdisciplinary, holistic thinking. A personal takeaway from my undergraduate experience is the importance of reaching out and taking initiatives.

Moving forward, I plan to pursue a Master’s in Global Health at ASU. As my great-grandmother used to say, “Even if you have the whole world, you have nothing without good health,” a reminder that motivates me to create equitable solutions for public health challenges.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who supported me along the way.
