Experts say the nation's economy is slowly recovering, but those reading this who are looking for work know that the recovery is slow and uncertain -- especially where jobs concerned. Even in good times, the "fast track" to a new position often runs through a connection with someone in your network.
This fall, the ASU Alumni Association expanded its career offerings with the debut of the Alumni Career Resources program. It has a number of components that can help ASU grads bolster their careers, no matter their age or level of experience.
Sun Devils living in Maricopa County can:
+ Sign up for Career Coach and Coffee sessions at Old Main. This twice-monthly event allows alums to discuss career management issues during an in-person appointment with a career coach. To find out the dates for upcoming sessions or to make an appointment, call 480-965-2350.
If you are a dues-paying member of the Alumni Association, mention that when you call. All members are eligible for a reduced rate for the coaching sessions, and life members get one complimentary session!
+ Attend our monthly Maroon & Gold Professional and quarterly Women in Business networking mixers. These events are a great way to meet other ASU alumni and expand your network.
+ Plan to attend our upcoming series of presentations on career topics, including sessions on executive search and placement and using social media on the job.
+ Attend special events with a career focus. Early in the new year, we'll host ASU faculty member and women's empowerment expert Gloria Feldt and a star-studded panel of local female executives in a session entitled Learn to Unlock Your Unlimited Potential.
Alumni living elsewhere can also tap ASU's career tools.
+ Remote (phone/email) career coaching sessions are available. Call 480-965-2350 for details.
+ Chapters, clubs, and connection groups across the country are sponsoring networking events. Check our National Opportunities page for upcoming mixers.
+ Our LinkedIn group has thousands of members and a lively discussion board.
+ You can keep your professional skills sharp or learn new ones by taking classes through ASU Online and listening to podcasts available through the iTunes U at ASU channel.
No matter where you live, the Career Resources tab on the Alumni Association's website is the best way to access career-related content produced by the Alumni Association and keep up-to-date on new tools and events. I'll be passing along information on the program as time goes by!
