Kate Spade is the co-founder and fashion designer of her own namesake line of handbags and merchandise. Spade transferred from the University of Kansas to attend the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1985. After graduation, Spade made her way to New York City to work for Mademoiselle magazine, where she became a senior fashion editor and head of accessories. In 1991, she left Mademoiselle, and launched her own line of handbags in 1993. Spade’s business has grown to include everything from stationery, personal organizers and address books, to shoes, beauty products, outerwear and eyewear. The company operates several retail stores and Spade’s products also sell through stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. She has received multiple awards throughout her career, including the 1996 Council of Fashion Designers of America’s "America's New Fashion Talent in Accessories" award and "Best Accessory Designer of the Year." Spade's home collection also won her three design awards in 2004.
