don wakamatsu

A native of Hood River, Ore., Don Wakamatsu is known for his time spent as a Major League Baseball player and manager. Wakamatsu was a three-sport star who came to Arizona State University to play as a baseball catcher for the Sun Devils. He was an “All Pac-10 Catcher” during his last three years at ASU. Wakamatsu was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1985 and later played for the Chicago White Sox before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wakamatsu also played at the Double-A and Triple-A farm teams of the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers organizations before retiring as a player. After retirement, he coached in the minor leagues before becoming the bench coach for the Texas Rangers and later the Oakland Athletics. He became manager of the Seattle Mariners in 2008,  which made him the first Asian-American manager in the majors. He is currently a bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.
