Your career is a journey … Share Your Road with other Sun Devils!

There are twists and turns in every career path. (Photo courtesy of Pixabay.)

One of the biggest myths about professional development that many college students fall prey to is believing that managing their career is going to be a short drive on a dry, well-maintained road to their clearly marked destination (goal).

(If you’re more than five years out of school, you can get back in the chair that you probably just fell out of laughing.)

And it’s really a good thing that career development is often a meandering journey on a winding road, sometimes in scary weather. Our path to finding our purpose may involve more than a few loops, turns, and pit stops. But diverse career experiences make us greater contributors to our relationships, workplace, and society, and many of today’s success stories started their careers in a different industry or role than they hold today. For example, Jonah Peretti, co-founder of BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post, did a turn teaching middle-schoolers how to use Microsoft Office as a computer science instructor. One of the world’s top fashion designers, Vera Wang, began her career as a figure skater (yes, a figure skater) and journalist before transforming the fashion industry. Finding your purpose may take a few years, or even a few decades, to discover, but we can often get better at navigating all the changes we encounter by listening to the “tales of the road” from other working professionals.

Sun Devils of every age have a great new tool to share or read about the career journeys of their fellow alumni. Roadtrip Nation, a company founded in 2001 that’s dedicated to helping people answer the question, “What should I do with my life,” recently partnered with ASU to create a special website for alums to learn about the career narratives of other Sun Devils, young and old.

The ASU Share Your Road website is an archive of career stories of Sun Devil alumni.

The ASU Share Your Road website is an archive of career stories shared by Sun Devil alumni. Visitors can search by occupation, company, or name to find a story they would like to read. Professionals sharing their story are guided through a process that helps them share key parts of their journey in a format that’s easy for readers to digest and learn from.

In order for this website to be of the most value for everyone, we need to gather as many stories as possible! ASU Alumni Career Services has set a goal of having 500 completed profiles on the site by June 30, 2017. You can help us achieve this goal by doing any or all of the following.

  1. Share your story on the site at
  2. Encourage Sun Devils you know with interesting career stories to submit their stories to Share Your Road.
  3. Read stories on the site and share them on social media.

As everyone who’s taken a road trip knows, even the most challenging journey is easier when you have a map. If you’ve been someplace amazing with your career and you want to make the road easier for those following you, get on over to Share Your Road and help us with the driving directions!
