It’s been said that there are two types of people in life: planners and plungers. While both approaches to life have merit, I can report as a “confirmed planner” that if you tend toward making plans before acting, there is one major danger with that: NEVER ACTING. Many times, we planners tend to think our first steps have to be as grand and as expansive as our plans. They don’t! In fact, many times, it’s actually better if our first steps are modest; it’s much easier in that case to pivot, redirect, or even return to the drawing board if those beautiful plans need to be redrawn due to circumstances, market reaction … etc.
No less a sage than author Mark Twain advised readers, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” ASU Alumni Career Services is offering several opportunities during July to “just do it” when it comes to acting on your career development plan. Come to a job fair or networking event … sign up for a career coaching session … or take an online webinar to brush up on your professional presentation skills.
Just take one action. If you like, you can even count signing up for the event as one action, and actually attending your career event as another! After your first steps into career advancement, the next ones will most likely come easier and the path may well become more clear.
Best of luck and much success on your journey!
