One of the lessons that may come as the biggest surprise to straight-A students when they graduate is that in the world of work, the role of individual achievement shifts dramatically. Certainly, potential employers want to know you’re creative, industrious and competent in your field. But more than that, they want to know how well you collaborate on a variety of levels: with your co-workers, with your supervisor, with others in your organization, and with customers, clients and service partners.
Forbes magazine has listed collaboration skills (in particular, virtual collaboration skills) as one of its top 10 skills for the future. It’s a complex set of competencies, including the ability to gain cooperation or buy-in, encourage teamwork, identify possible solutions and the best ways to implement them, expanding the definition of success to create a win-win for all parties involved.
You can start flexing your collaborative muscles this month by making ASU Alumni Career Services your partner in meeting your career goals. A variety of live/in-person and online/virtual activities are available. Each one offers you the chance to pick up new skills and connect with individuals who complement your strengths.
Here are some of the events hosted by ASU Career Services in the next few weeks. Good luck!
