Give your professional image a makeover and try something new this month

It’s 2016, but does your approach to job hunting scream 2006? 1996? or even (heaven forbid) 1986?

Don’t get me wrong - I’ve been in the workforce long enough to see how experience can be an immense asset in the office. However, sometimes experience - especially if it’s the same type of experience over and over, for the same or very similar employers - can blind us to how the marketplace is changing.

Careers expert Liz Ryan compiled a great list a few years ago of archaic job search tactics that no longer work. Things to chuck out the proverbial window included fancy resume paper (when was the last time you mailed a paper resume???), creaky and vague cover letter language (“To Whom It May Concern,” “Dear Sir or Madam” and the ilk), and endless bullet points on your resume for each job (keep it short and snappy).

The ASU Alumni Career Services program now offers a diverse menu of events and services for you to boost your career. You can visit our traditional mixers, do in-depth online research and networking from your office or home, or go “behind the scenes” and do a full immersion visit of a major employer’s Phoenix offices.

Sure, some of these settings will probably push you out of your comfort zone. But since Fast Company mentioned a willingness to learn as one of the career skills most needed in 2016 to stay competitive, getting out and trying these new activities might even be something you use to demonstrate your flexibility and adaptiveness in your next job interview!

Here are some of the events hosted by the ASU Alumni Association in the next month:

Sun Devil Networking Hour - What’s It Like To Work For Amazon?: 11 a.m. (Arizona time - Pacific Daylight/Mountain Standard), Wednesday, April 6.
This is a fantastic online “speed networking” opportunity for you if Amazon has ever been on your list of desired employers! Sign in to this session from your desktop computer, smartphone or tablet. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing you to make connections, exchange contact information, and end the hour with several new connections you didn't have before.

Women in Business Networking Mixer: 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, Kelly’s at Southbridge, 7117 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale.
Join other successful Sun Devil professional women and relax at this casual traditional live networking mixer. Enjoy beverages and appetizers and expand your horizons … as well as your network!

Sun Devil Networking Hour - Connections on the East Coast: 3:30 p.m. (Arizona time - Pacific Daylight/Mountain Standard), Thursday, April 21.
Research the possibilities of living and working along the East Coast during this online chat session. This is your chance to discover leading companies in that region and speak with ASU alumni who want to share their wisdom and experiences with you. You can connect using your desktop computer, your smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device.

Amazon Immersion Site Visit: 3 p.m., Friday, April 29, Amazon offices, 40 E. Rio Salado Parkway, 6th Floor, Tempe.
This “in-person” career field trip is every job-seeker's dream - a tour behind the scenes of one of the Valley’s leading employers. The event includes a tour of the Tempe offices, a showcase of the company, and a networking mixer and raffle. This is a FREE event - all you have to do is get there!

THIS JUST IN! Coming Next Month!

Tackle Life: A Pep Talk with Coach Todd Graham: 11 a.m., Thursday, May 12, Phoenix Marriott Tempe at the Buttes, 2000 W. Westcourt Way, Tempe.
